I saw some video clips form Loren Avedan on youtube and I was infeluenced by his techniques and energy. It was intersting for me to find out that he started his acting career when he was very young. I did some search about him and found him on facebook. I am happy that he is my friend on this networking website. I hope I would see him in future. Good Luck Loren

I've been a fan of yours since I saw you in No Retreat, No Surrender 2. I hope to eventually see every movie you've ever made. You one of my favorite martial artists and I think it's a shame that your not as mainstream as some of the other martial arts actors like Van Damme, Jet Li and Jackie Chan. I hope to see you in more movies doing what you do best.

This guy wrote the bible so I figured I'd let it be... :) Loren The rise of European cinema was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I when the film industry in United States flourished with the rise of Hollywood, typified most prominently by the great innovative work of D. W. Griffith in The Birth of a Nation (1914) and Intolerance (1916). However in the 1920s, European filmmakers such http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category1.html as Sergei Eisenstein, F. W. Murnau, and Fritz Lang, in many ways inspired by the meteoric war-time progress of film through Griffith, along with the contributions of Charles Chaplin, Buster Keaton and others, quickly caught up with American film-making and continued to further advance the medium. In the 1920s, new technology allowed filmmakers to attach to each film a soundtrack of speech, music and sound effects synchronized with the action on the screen. These sound films were initially distinguished by calling them "talking pictures", or talkies. The next major step in the development of cinema was the introduction of so-called "natural color", which meant color that was http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category2.html photographically recorded from nature rather than being added to black-and-white prints by hand-coloring, stencil-coloring or other arbitrary procedures, although the earliest processes typically yielded colors which were far from "natural" in appearance. While the addition of sound quickly eclipsed silent film and theater musicians, color replaced black-and-white much more gradually. The pivotal innovation was the introduction of the three-strip version of the Technicolor process, which was first used for short subjects and for isolated sequences in a few feature-length films released in 1934, then for an entire feature film, Becky Sharp, in 1935. The expense of the process was daunting, but continued favorable public response and enhanced http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category3.html box-office receipts increasingly justified the In the early 1950s, as the proliferation of black-and-white television started seriously depressing theater attendance in the US, the use of color was seen as one way of winning back audiences. It soon became the rule rather than the exception. Some important mainstream Hollywood films were still being made in black-and-white as late as the mid-1960s, but they marked the end of an era. Color television receivers had been available in the US since the mid-1950s, but at first they were very expensive http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category4.html and few broadcasts were in color. During the 1960s, prices gradually came down, color broadcasts became common, and the sale of color television sets boomed. The strong preference of the general public for color was obvious. After the final flurry of black-and-white film releases in mid-decade, all major Hollywood studio film production was exclusively in color, with rare exceptions reluctantly made only at the insistence of "star" directors such as Peter Bogdanovic Since the decline of the studio system in the 1960s, the succeeding decades saw changes in the production and style of film. Various New Wave movements (including the French New Wave, Indian New Wave, Japanese New Wave and New Hollywood) and the rise of film school educated independent filmmakers were all part of the changes the medium http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category5.html experienced in the latter half of the 20th century. Digital technology has been the driving force in change throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s.Film criticism is the analysis and evaluation of films. In general, these works can be divided into two categories: academic criticism by film scholars and journalistic film criticism that appears regularly in newspapers and other media. Film critics working for newspapers, magazines, and broadcast media mainly review new releases. Normally they only see any given film once and have only a day or two to formulate http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category6.html opinions. Despite this, critics have an important impact on films, especially those of certain genres. Mass marketed action, horror, and comedy films tend not to be greatly affected by a critic's overall judgment of a film. The plot summary and description of a film that makes up the majority of any film review can still have an important impact on whether people decide to see a film. For prestige films such as most dramas, the influence of reviews is extremely important. Poor reviews will often doom a film to obscurity and financial loss. The impact of a reviewer on a given film's box office performance is a matter of debate. Some claim that movie marketing is now so intense and well financed that reviewers cannot make an impact against it. However, the cataclysmic failure of some heavily promoted movies which were harshly reviewed, as well as the unexpected success of critically praised independent movies indicates that extreme critical reactions can have http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category7.html considerable influence. Others note that positive film reviews have been shown to spark interest in little-known films. Conversely, there have been several films in which film companies have so little confidence that they refuse to give reviewers an advanced viewing to avoid widespread panning of the film. However, this usually backfires as reviewers are wise to the tactic and warn the public that the film may not be worth seeing and the films often do poorly as a result. It is argued that journalist film critics should only be known as film reviewers, and true film critics are those who take a more academic approach to films. This line of work is more often known as film theory or film studies. These film critics attempt to come to understand how film and filming techniques work, and what effect they have on people. Rather than having their works published http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/category8.html in newspapers or appear on television, their articles are published in scholarly journals, or sometimes in up-market magazines. They also tend to be affiliated with colleges or universities. The making and showing of motion pictures became a source of profit almost as soon as the process was invented. Upon seeing how successful their new invention, and its product, was in their native France, the Lumières quickly set about touring the Continent to exhibit the first films privately to royalty and publicly to the masses. In each country, they would normally add new, local >From 1931 to 1956, film was also the only image storage and playback system for television programming until the introduction of videotape recorders. In the United States today, much of the film industry is centered around Hollywood. Other regional centers exist in many parts of the world, such as Mumbai-centered Bollywood, the Indian film industry's Hindi cinema which produces the largest number of films in the world.[2] Whether the ten thousand-plus feature length films a year produced by the Valley pornographic film industry should qualify for this title is the source of some debate.[citation needed] Though the expense involved in making movies has led cinema production to concentrate under http://www.kiwata.com/images/film/index.html the auspices of movie studios, recent advances in affordable film making equipment have allowed independent film productions to flourish. Profit is a key force in the industry, due to the costly and risky nature of filmmaking; many films have large cost overruns, a notorious example being Kevin Costner's Waterworld. Yet many filmmakers strive to create works of lasting social significance. The Academy Awards (also known as "the Oscars") are the most prominent film awards in the United States, providing recognition each year to films, ostensibly based on their artistic merits. There is also a large industry for educational and instructional films made in lieu of or in addition to lectures and texts.

I really loved your film, King of the Kickboxers. There's some great raw skills in that film. In fact, I was greatly inspired to make my own action film shortly after (The Trespassers) Sadly, if they were to make that film today, your skilled moves would be replaced by fake CGI and slow-motion (eg The Matrix) tricks. I'd really love to get an autographed photo from you. If it's possible, please send me an email!!!

Hi Loren, have been following your films from day one, I think your fighting techniques are flawless. Just don't see films like the 80's anymore. It's ashame, I know now they may look cheesy (the films) but the fight sequencies were sublime. I thought the fight scene in nrns 3 blood brothers between you your brother, Franco and his partner was superb. Please reply to this to my email, would be great to get your take on this.

Hi Loren Last time I saw your face was on a film called King of Kickboxers and No Retreat No Surrender 3 and I was only 12 at the time. I started training in Karate when I was 9 and then moved on to Tae Kwon Do when I was 13. I earned my black belt when I was 19 and was teaching for my former instructor. I had a career break from teaching and cross trained in Kickboxing, JKD/Wing Chun and Tai Chi and went to many seminers to study different arts and concepts from standind, throwing, ground fighting and weapons. I recently started my own school in september this year and now I have 37 junior students training regularly, and some of my students are already starting to shine. I am using my martial arts as a tool to help improve their confidence so they can choose the outcome between right and wrong. The parents love the concepts I teach in class, and I had one parent come and thank me as her son won his first trophy in school sports activity, and another parent saying that her son has become much better behaved at home. Those parents are also helping me to promote my school by reffering new members. I love my life as a martial artist and it only seems like yesterday when me and a friend of mine used to watch martial arts movies and then go training after. Some good memories, and now I have a purpose in life and that is to share what i have learned with my students and have a positive influence in their life. Its amazing what you and other martial artists have done by making movies. I bet you didn't know that you would have made that kind of impact. Sorry to go on, what are you up to these days? I know you maybe a really busy person but it will be grat to hear from you. It's my 31st birthday on wednesday. But I am keeping a youthfull spirit as I have a purpose in life. Looking forward to a great future etc. Best regards, Sumon Choudhury Director/Chief Instructor VICTORY MARTIAL ARTS

I'm a huge fan of your No Retreat, No Surrender & King of the Kickboxers film. When I was a teenager, your films would be aired late at night on the TNT movie network. I would set the VCR, and watch them during the week before doing my homework or working out. I wanted to let you know that your films are quite popular on the Peer-to-Peer file sharing networks. Since there was never an official Region 1 DVD release, downloading it was the only way I could get a better quality version than my old VHS copy. Hope you don't mind. Thanks again for your contribution to martial arts cinema.

I mustn't have been more than 6 or 7 when my brothers and I hired King of the Kickboxers from our local video store in the early 90s. It remained a favourite until I forgot all about it. I recently remembered how awesome the training montage and final fight scenes were and unfortunately had to resort to youtube.com to relive the magic. Hopefully it gets a release on DVD sometime soon. Jake VS Khan has to be one of the most amazing fights ever filmed. Thanks for the memories, Loren. I'll always be a fan.

Hi Jake. I hope you are doing great. I grew up watching No retreat No surrender and of course the very well done King of the Kickboxers. I was an ITF Tae-kwondoist at the time and really enjoyed mimicking your moves during Matsogi. Take care. Keep on kicking.

Mr. Avedon. I started my martial arts training in 1990. Your movies: No Retreat No Surrender 2 & 3 and King of the Kickboxers were a huge influence on my training. I have been trying for the last 1 1/2 years to find those movies on DVD that will play in the USA region. If you could help put in me in the right direction or offer them for sale in your store I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much. Your long time fan, Bryan Pope

Hello Loren! I hope this email finds you in good health and great spirits! I`ve been a fan of yours since I was a kid growing up in the U.S. Watching your movies and training with guys like you, Billy Blanks, Daniel Bernhardt, Jackie, and Jet Li you via video is probably the only thing that kept me out of trouble when I was young! Even though we never met, your movies really did have a profound effect on my life so I just wanted to say thanks! I`m 30 years old now, living in Tokyo, married with baby on the way and working as an IT professional. I never made it into acting and my martial arts skills have dulled greatly over the past 5 years so I guess I never really made it to your level in that respect (not yet anyways, I`ve just started re-training myself from scratch! I still have a long way to go tho)... But actually, there is one goal I have been able to reach during the past few years thanks to you guys! I`d like for you to take a look at my URL. I`m also a sci-fi/ action author. My first book just went on sell in the U.S. last week. I wanted you to check it out and take a look at it because originally, the book was written for you! Actually, my two main characters were based on you and Billy Blanks from King of the Kickboxers! I`ve been working on this story since I was 13 years old (long story) but my original fantasy was o write the books and get a movie deal so that you and Billy could play the lead roles. Of course a lot has happened since then. As I grew up, the characters changed and evolved with me as well. The fighting style of each character changed to reflect more of the character`s individual nature and the characters are actually younger now (late 20`s~early 30`s so the lead roles would have to be played by actors younger than you and Billy). But I never had the heart to really take you guys out of the story completely, so I`ve actually re-written some new and major roles for you that will appear in the 2nd and 3rd books. (Billy`s character is a bad guy again, and yours is a good guy who`s an ancestor of one of the main female characters. Both of you are going to die in the book though... ^_~) At any rate, I would like to send you a signed copy of my first book. It`s something I really want you to have. So if you`re interested, please let me know and I`ll get a free copy to you in the mail cool? Thanks again for your time (I know you`re busy) and I hope you`ll enjoy the book! Take Care! I myself was about seven years old when I first saw "No Retreat, No Surrender 2" and "Blood Brothers" and now, almost 20 years later, I can say that those movies definitely made me want to learn how to fight and that is why i decided to practice tae kwon do. Loren Love your website and your movies. You truly are a talented and outstanding martial artist. Would you mind answering a few questions of mine? 1) Were there any other types of martial arts that you considered studying/want to studied/havn't studied but admire? 2) What are your thoughts on Hapkido & Taekwando as opposed to the UFC/MMA style of Martial arts that has become popular? 3) What is the most painful injury you've sustained in your movie fighting career? 4) What do you like doing in your spare time? Thanks a lot Keep up the good work.

Thanks Loren for a great memories - You were a real hero for us here in eastern europe. Our childhood in early 90s was full of "Karate Tiger" as it was called in Europe "No Retreat, No Surrender" for US :-) . I stil remember seeing the 2nd part at school (end of school year 7th grade party). And the cool fight with Nicolas Hues...!!! And of course the ultimate King of the Kickboxers with Keith Cooke and Bili Blanks> One of the best Martial Arts movies of all. At least for us and our childhood. Thanks and Good luck in your future activities. Tom PS> I just bought all No Retreat films including King of the Kickboxers in a box set :-) Pure fun

Hi Loren: I'm a big fan of all your films. We are having a martial arts movie party at my house this year and King of the Kickboxers is without a doubt the movie requested the most. I hope you have a new film coming out sometime soon. The world of martial arts films isn't the same without you! Do you do appearances at film festivals or movie houses? We would love to have you visit us here in Houston. There is a theater chain here called the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema that likes to sponsor celebrity speakers while showing special presentations of their films. It would be great to have you on board for one of those events to meet your fans and sign autographs. Take Care, James Rojas

We know there were some directing issues (or at least editing, when the chick is yelling Jack not Jake in the end), but man, we quote that movie practically daily after all these years. Hi Loren, I just wanted to thank you for the films that you have done in the past. I love watching martial arts movies. I saw you for the first time in No Retreat No Surrender II along with Cynthia (by the way she is awesome and that was the first time I'd seen her) back in the 80's. I had never heard of you before but wow you were great in that movie. After that movie, I called and looked around different places to see if there were any other movies with you. (There wasn't really the "internet" at that time so it was a little harder.) I found "King of the Kickboxers". Great movie my favorite! There are others I saw but I'm going to check out the rest of this site to see if there is anything I missed. By the way, I just wanted to know because I was really disappointed. You were in an episode of "Martial Law" with Sammo Hung. I was hoping to see you fight with Sammo. But what was surprising was your character. I didn't expect it. Anyway, I hope there are some other movies I missed because I have enjoyed everything you've done so far. Dino

Watched you kick ass in your films in the days when martial arts films were slapped on to video in no time at all and were a big hit, watching people like yourself, Jackie Chan and Van Damme was the reason I took it up but life goes on and it was one of the best things I ever done - I am now just so gutted I stopped doing it years ago.

I've studied martial arts since 1989, I'm also a cinematographer/Director/Editor(only doing music videos right now), so I understand and respect your work. I'd like to make my own low budget martial movies as well, unfortunately my budget is TOO low! I just recently watched the NRNS trilogy(again)!, it made my week. Keep up the good work! The acting is terrible(please take no offense), but the action scenes are incredible! I only wish you people would stop bashing Van Damme, it seems like everyone in the movie business hates him, is he such an asshole?!!

Hi Master Avedon, I just wanted to say thank you, Your movies are what made me get into W.T.F Taekwondo when I was a kid. I could see in your movies from your dynamic kicking that Taekwondo must have been your art. Since then,I have fought for my country abroad and have set up my own club where I can pass on the knowledge I have learned throughout the years to younger students. You have truely been a great inspiration and idol to me and I just wanted to say thank you, Sincerely, Gavin Daly, 1st dan

Hi Loren how are you doing my name is Victor i'm 25 years old and live in Sydney Australia. I'm originally from Ukraine from the city of Odecca and i practically grew up on the 70's and 80's martial arts and action movies so i guess you could say i'm an old school buff and i have always enjoyed your movies, they sure don't make them like that anymore the closest movie that reminded me of the early 80's in martial arts genre today would probably be Ong Bak anything else is just too much special sci fi effects and you dont see real martial artists doing real martial arts. Anyway just wanted to say hi and hope you and your family are doing well and looking forward to seeing you in more great movies as you have been doing for real fans who appreciate the values and art of true martial arts.

You are truly a great martial artist and I have even learnt some kicking techniques of yours by watching you in King Of The Kickboxers and liked a certain hook kick combo you did in the movie and decided to try it in training later that night. I remember this was sometime in the 90's when I was only about 14, I'm 25 now. I was matched with one of my instructors (Tae Kwon Do) for sparring during the rounds I used your hook kick combo on him that I learned just from watching the movie and it worked! It was just as he was moving in for the attack which surpised me and himself even more because (back then) I normally used to retreat backwards as he comes forward but held my ground and sconned him one. From then on I was a hooked Loren Avedon fan. Thankyou for your entertaining films and I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your movies in the near future. Take care my friend.

Woah, Loren Avedon has his own site? Brilliant!!! I still can't get the fight scene in the hangar on the scaffolding in NRNS 3 out of my head, and that was when the film first came out too! Awesome! That albino guy can really jump too. And then he goes and ruins it by appearing in the cheese-tastic King Of The Kickboxers. If Billy Blanks had went albino rather than Tae Bo it might have been a different story...

Just saw King of Kickboxers, great flick. A buddy of yours, Mihai, turned me on to your stuff. I'm suprised I hadn't seen any of your films sooner. I grew up watching nothing but Golden Harvest, Cannon, & Orion films. I'm a film geek trying to break in the industry. Maybe if I ever make it I'll definatly give you a call, Mihai too. Somebody asked me yesterday how the world was treating me, I said, "I'm treating it better than it has treated me. But I love the curve balls because without them things wouldn't be as interesting." Id just like to say thanks alot to you mr Avedon, your personal effort, skill and determination on screen have been truly inspirational over the years. You make me want to push harder, and be the best i can be. The impact of your films on a 'real world' level can not be messed with, and you definately dont get the acclaim that you deserve. Keep going though man, the proof is in your movies and the way you live your life! Wicked that your films are out on dvd, sharpening up the old classics that were so important, then and now! no retreat no surrender.

Great site Loren. I've seen your NRNS movies and I was blown away by a preview for KOTK and rented it. Was definately not disappointed. Nice to have an insight to you on a personal note. Your hard work ethic shows and your coreography is amazing. Was wondering if you knew Mark Dacascos or ever worked with him? Wish guys like you and him got the exposure that you deserve. Good luck!

You kick ass Loren. Feel free to drop me a line. It would make my day, hell month, lol. P.S. I was delighted to see when I bought all the nrns movies on amazon.co.uk that there were new scenes added. i heard of loren in tiger claws 3,but that was a long time ago, then i borroed no retreat no surrender 2 from my friend, and when i watched the pyrotechnics and lorens great agility,i mean this guy was doing wall jumps and flips wayyy before it became commonplace in jet li and jackie chan movies of the late 90's.i honestly beleive he should get a part in any one of these more well known martial artists movies, even if its a bad guy part.he is just as good,if not better.he is terribly underrated. and yes,i hope people stop all this cgi crap, cause i want to see real action.ironically its the cheap b movies that avedon, blanks, merhi and rothrock that have real action left in them, not cgi.mr avedon, you should have gotten your break a long time ago if this world is fair.

Loren, thoroughly enjoyed the Cityonfire interview. I rarely sit down and read any interview past question #2 and was pulled in to hear your stories and views. Makes me wish I didn't have to give up Tae Kwon Do because of school(3 hours of homework every night is a bit much, lol). Never too late to go back I guess. So, who's up for a NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 4?

What's up Loren. I'm sorry I have'nt been here in a while. How are you and your family doing? I'm working on a script right now. It's more of a straight action movie. I had you in mind for the leading role. All we need is a good action (John Woo,Godfrey Ho,Jalal Merhi or Tsui Hark style)director . Well Loren, I'll be stopping by more often. God Bless You and your family.

I my name' Olivier and i'm a fan from the great white north aka Canada. I really enjoy your movies and i'm planing to buy all of your movies in DVD ( i got most of them in VHS ). I practice Taekwondo for the last 15 years and i'm a first degree black belt. I wonder if we could train some time you and me, I would love it. And I don't understand why big producer don't give you big movies. You are one great actor and you can stand and even beat some big names like Jean Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan, Gary Daniels, Chuck Norris, Mark Dacascos just to name a few. If I where a big producer in Hollywood, I will pick you to be my big star of the movie. I got an idea, let's make a film with you and Van Damme ? I would love to see you kick Van Damme ass. Please reply me on my e-mail adress I would it. Take care of you and good luck with your futur projects. Olivier

Loren Avedon is the bomb. He kicks ass. I haven't seen all his movies, but I saw NRNS 2 and 3, and King of the Kickboxers. I also saw when he came out on Baywatch. Iwas tripping out on that one. I think he should have kicked Hasselhoff's butt, but then again he is the Knight Rider. Hey Loren if you actually read this, email me.

Howdy Mr. Avedon, love the new look of the site. Awesome flash graphics at the beginning, reminds me of the cool video games a la METAL GEAR. My fave of yours remains NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER 3, I even brought that one to watch at school my very last day there. But ya know, KING OF THE KICKBOXERS comes a close second place. Hope Seasonal Film Corporation keeps cranking them out. I think the only movies they've produced in the past 5 years were SUPERFIGHTS and BLOODMOON. Think every single movie they've made was written by Keith Strandberg, lol. But hopefully we can work together someday! - E.S.
